TEHRAN (IQNA) – Jordanian activists have launched a campaign in social media to voice their objection to the government restrictions imposed on the activities of Quran memorization centers.

They say they are opposed to the new conditions that limit the activities of Quran centers and Islamic centers in the country, Jo24.net website reported.

The government has announced restrictions such as fewer working hours for the centers and conditions for managers and teachers.

Those willing to teach at the centers now need to pass examinations held by the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs.

Activists say meeting some of the introduced conditions is not possible because many of these centers work on a voluntary basis.

According to Hassan al-Riyati, a member of Jordan’s parliament, there are some 1,500 Quranic centers in the country.

He said one of the new conditions introduced for running the centers is that their managers should be full-time, which needs employment of 1,500 managers and the government may not be able to do that.

He added that banning any activity in the centers without obtaining permission also limits their activities.

An activist wrote in his Facebook page that Jordan’s Holy Quran Memorization Society that has trained thousands of memorizers is one of the centers whose activities will be affected by the new regulations.

He deplored the fact that such centers are being restricted instead of being commended for their achievements.

Another activist also slammed the new decision, saying it would undermine efforts to promote the religious culture in society.
